Why it's bad to be ambitious...

Balancing Ambition & Action as a CS Student

I have a gift for you! It’s a quote:

“Think Big. Start small. But most of all… start” - Simon Sinek

It’s such a simple saying but it’s given me the right mentality to balance ambition with action. I hope my explanation helps you since it’s something I’ve thought about and relate to.

Sometimes it’s bad to be ambitious.

Sometimes when you just do your thing and focus on yourself then good things magically happen.

An example of this was that last summer I expected myself to do hours of interview prep every day to get a good internship.

My logic was: I believe in myself, so I deserve the best internship.

You would think that logic is fine, but it isn’t. There are things in our control and things we can’t control.

We can’t control what opportunities come to us or what people think of us. But we can control how well-positioned we are to get the things we want.

We can control our thoughts, actions, and words, but not the results and perceptions created from them.

When I gave up on my “get the best internship” mentality, opportunities came to me on their own. This is not my way of telling you how to get a big internship, I’m telling you to shift your focus to improving yourself + working on your ideas, and then the opportunities will come.

Your skill and ability to execute what you CAN do is more important than focusing on the opportunities you can’t control.

If you are like me and want to keep improving yourself and achieve more:

  1. Give up on your expectations for yourself

  2. Take a week to make a plan

  3. Just start what you want to do.

I will share the early stages of a new project I’m working on in my next newsletter, so you can learn from my mistakes and builder journey. In exchange, this will help me communicate better and keep me accountable.

Feel free to share this newsletter with anyone else who would find this useful on their tech journey!
